New research from AI and Ethics (January 2025) shows how AI makes a real difference for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A team led by Fatemeh Habibi reviewed 128 studies and focused on 13 standout examples of AI in action. The results are impressive.
Take "LIFEisGAME," an AI-powered tool that uses facial recognition to help students recognize emotions. In just 12 weeks, emotion recognition skills improved. Another tool, the Kiwi robot, combines AI with interactive lessons to boost math skills and improve social interactions. These technologies act like tireless tutors, adjusting lessons based on real-time analysis of students' progress and reactions.
Some tools go further. Virtual reality helps students practice social skills in a safe space, while augmented reality offers step-by-step guidance for daily interactions. Teachers also benefit from detailed AI-generated progress reports and simulations that let them see the world from an autistic student's perspective.
It's about creating personalized support systems that adapt to each student's unique needs. If AI can do this for special education, imagine what it could achieve in regular classrooms. Personalized learning for every student could soon be a reality.
